OVERDRIVE
Selective gears, 3 speeds forward (& one reverse) with a planetary gear train providing an automatic 4th gear. In Overdrive, engine speed is reduced 30% while road speed is unchanged. Overdrive is engaged by releasing the accelerator for an instant after the car speed reaches 27 mph. Extra power is available for passing or hill-climbing by simply pressing the accelerator all the way down.
FORDOMATIC DRIVE
Combines a torque converter & an automatic gear system. Engine power is always transmitted to the driving wheels through a cushion of oil in the torque converter. At no time is there a mechanical linkage between the engine & the driving mechanism. Engine starts with the selector in N (Neutral) position. In DR (Drive), usual part-throttle take offs are in 2nd gear, with auto upshifts to 3rd. Also in DR (Drive), full-throttle take offs are in 1st gear, with auto upshifts to 2nd & 3rd. In LO (Low), take offs are in 1st gear and held, until the selector is moved to DR (Drive) for auto upshifts to 2nd & 3rd.
