two gears spinning NOTE   Horsepower & torque ratings are "gross" under pre-1972 SAE (Society of Automotive Engineers) standards—measured at the flywheel with the engine running on a dynamometer test stand without intake, exhaust, & equipment (like alternator) connected. 1972+ ratings are typically "net"—measured with the drag of intake, exhaust, & equipment attached (a lower rating).
